The District of Columbia is preparing to move forward with a plan to legalize online gambling, following the expiration of a 30-day waiting period when Congress could have blocked the measure. Mayor Vincent Gray signed the plan into law in January as part of the city’s 2011 budget. The Washington Post reported that city officials are now planning to set up as many as 30 online gambling “hot spots” in locations like hotels and bars across DC by Sept. 1, making the city the first U.S. jurisdiction to allow Internet gambling. Congress, however, may still intervene on the project, which is seen as a way to generated much-needed revenue for the District, according to Potomac Tech Wire.
