7/23 – New Book to Profile Wide Receiver Cris Carter

HYPERION TO PUBLISH BOOK BY LEGENDARY WIDE RECEIVER AND ESPN COMMENTATOR CRIS CARTER ON FOOTBALL’S MOST TALKED ABOUT POSITION, THE WIDE RECEIVER

New York City, July 23, 2012 – Hyperion today announces plans to publish GOING DEEP: How Wide Receivers Became the Most Compelling Figures in Pro Sports by ESPN analyst and former NFL wide receiver Cris Carter and sports reporter Jeffri Chadiha in August 2013. Drawing from his own experience as a 16-year career wide receiver as well as extensive interviews with some of the most well-known and talented players of this position including Randy Moss and Larry Fitzgerald, and legendary coach Bill Parcells, Carter will offer readers an in-depth and entertaining analysis of the most exciting position in football.

The evolution of wide receivers’ dominance—both on and off the field—sparked lively analysis in 2011 when Carter appeared on the hit ESPN Radio show Mike and Mike in the Morning to discuss Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes’ disgruntled attitude during a game. That conversation led to a deeper discussion about the evolving nature of the position as the game changes. Today, wide receivers are known for their awe-inspiring plays, outgoing personalities, and the entertainment value they bring to football—but this wasn’t always the case.

In GOING DEEP, Carter will take an inside, in-depth look at both the history of the position and how it has blown up in recent years and come to dominate the game, transforming the NFL into a predominantly passing league. Filtering through his own personal experience and sharing anecdotes and accounts from the most well-known and outrageous players (past and present) in the league, he will chronicle the biggest personalities in the position and show just how they’ve changed the game of football.

The announcement of this new book was made by Executive Editor of Hyperion Kerri Kolen. Kolen acquired the world and first serial rights from agent Peter Steinberg of The Steinberg Agency.

Of the deal, Kolen said, “There aren’t too many in-depth, comprehensive books about the game of football itself in the marketplace today and GOING DEEP delivers the goods. It is intelligent, brazen, dishy, insightful and written by two authors who are uniquely positioned to turn it into a football classic.”

Carter said, “I believe wide receivers are difference makers in the National Football League, and I want to give fans insight as to why. In this book for Hyperion, Jeffri and I explore the importance of the wide receiver role and how this position has changed over time. Based on my experience and our conversations with NFL coaches and receivers, we hope to provide fans of football a deeper understanding of the wide receiver and the game itself.”

Carter spent sixteen years as a wide receiver in the NFL, where he became one of the most dominant pass-catchers in the history of football, played in eight Pro Bowls, and set nearly every major receiving record for the Minnesota Vikings. At the end of his playing career, he ranked second all-time in the NFL in receptions and touchdown receptions before embarking on a broadcasting career that has led to his current position as ESPN analyst. He can be seen during the football season every Sunday and Monday on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown and Monday Night Countdown.

Chadiha has spent the last five years as a senior writer for ESPN.com and a contributor to ESPN The Magazine. Prior to joining ESPN in 2007, he was a senior writer for Sports Illustrated, where he worked for seven years.  He received a Sports Emmy in 2009.

With an accessible and enlightened approach, GOING DEEP will be a must-have for all football fans wanting an intelligent analysis, behind-the-scenes perspective, and never-before-told stories about the players they love.
