7/23 – British Open Finale Gets Double-Digit Increase

Though the increase was not as large as for Saturday’s third round, Sunday’s final round coverage of the British Open scored a substantial increase on ESPN. Final round coverage of the 2012 British Open drew a 3.3 overnight rating on ESPN Sunday morning and afternoon, up 27% from both last year (2.6) and 2010 (2.6). The 3.3 overnight is the highest ever for the British Open on ESPN (dates back to 2010), and the highest for any British Open telecast since ABC aired the final round in 2009 (3.9). Despite the increase, the 3.3 is the third-lowest for final round coverage of the British Open since at least 1995 (overnights prior to 1996 were not immediately available). In addition to the primary 8:00 AM ET-2:00 PM telecast window, early morning coverage from 6:00-8:00 AM drew a 0.8 overnight — up a tick from last year (0.7). Overall, all eight live British Open telecasts on ESPN had increases in overnight ratings compared to last year. Seven of the eight had double-digit increases, reports Sports Media Watch.
