Ted Leonsis, majority owner of the Capitals and Wizards is upset with ESPN 980’s coverage of sports, outside of football, and he posted his strong opinion on his blog. Leonsis writes, “I find it ironic that this station doesn’t really cover the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards as they are owned by the local football team. They have lost an entire generation of sports fans because of that lack of programming sensibility as I predicted. Media properties need to generate a big audience by covering a large swath of listener interest. This station and its personalities – for the most part – don’t like hockey, pro basketball, baseball or soccer. They would never write an article like this about the football team. I doubt the writer would have the gumption to do so. And I find it ironic that an AM radio station – which I can’t hear at night because of static – calls a fast growing NBA team “invisible.” Leonsis needs to grow up and stop being so sensitive. He has a personality where he needs everyone to love and praise him, and when he perceives a media outlet does not kiss up to him and his teams, he takes it personally and attacks them. The main problem with the DC media is everyone wants to be in Ted’s good graces, so they are afraid to say anything remotely negative about him, so he never hears any differing opinions.
