6/25 – ‘Baseball Night in America’ Earns Season-High Number

Facing less formidable competition than usual, ‘Baseball Night in America’ surged to a season-high in the overnights. Regional Major League Baseball action featuring Yankees/Mets in 38% of markets drew a 3.3 overnight rating on FOX Saturday night, up 65% from afternoon coverage featuring Yankees/Cubs last year (2.0), and up 22% from primetime coverage featuring Yankees/Dodgers in 2010 (2.7). The 3.3 overnight is the highest of the season for a Major League Baseball telecast on FOX. The previous high was a 2.8 for primetime coverage on June 2. Overall, the 3.3 is the fifth-highest for a primetime MLB telecast on FOX (thirteen telecasts). Of the five highest-rated primetime telecasts on FOX in the metered markets, three featured the Yankees against the Mets. FOX likely benefited from the lack of competition Saturday night. Whereas previous windows faced the NBA Conference Finals, Stanley Cup Final, and golf’s U.S. Open, Saturday’s window aired opposite the U.S. Olympic Trials on NBC (1.3 overnight for diving, 2.6 for track & field), reports Sports Media Watch.
