NCAA College World Series Presented by Capital One
This year’s eight College World Series teams include the two-time defending champion, a squad looking for its first title in its 21st attempt, and two first-time participants. Highlights:
  • Two-time defending champion South Carolina is attempting to become the first team since USC to win more than two consecutive titles. The Gamecocks have won 21 straight NCAA Tournament games, last losing in the opening game of the 2010 College World Series. They will take on Florida – a rematch of last year’s best-of-three finals – on Saturday, June 16, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. The game marks the first time in more than 50 years an opening-round game of the College World Series will be a rematch of the previous event’s championship (Arizona played Oklahoma State in 1960).
  • Florida State will attempt to win the school’s first College World Series title when it makes its 21st trip to Omaha, the most appearances without winning the championship. Florida State will open against Arizona on Friday, June 15, at 9 p.m. on ESPN2.
  • Stony Brook, the first team to reach 50 wins this season, will make its first College World Series appearance in an opening round game against UCLA on Friday, June 15, at 5 p.m. on ESPN2. Stony Brook, of the America East Conference, is only the second team to open the tournament as a four-seed and reach the College World Series. The first, Fresno State in 2008, went on to win the national title.
  • Kent State, making its first College World Series appearance and the first to represent the Mid-American Conference since 1976, will take on Arkansas on Saturday, June 16, at 5 p.m. on ESPN. Arkansas, earning its seventh trip to the College World Series, is one of three Southeastern Conference teams.
Commentators
Former Stanford pitcher, and two-time College World Series participant, Kyle Peterson will provide analysis from the booth. Peterson, who serves as an analyst on ESPN’s regular-season and Championship round game telecasts, has worked as a field analyst during the College World Series since 2005.
Orel Hershiser and Nomar Garciaparra will return as analysts with Mike Patrick, Karl Ravech and Jon Sciambi providing play-by-play. Softball Olympic Gold (2004) and Silver (2008) Medalist Jessica Mendoza will report from the field along with former Florida standout Jenn Brown.
K Zone and X Mo
For second straight year, ESPN will use the Sports Emmy Award-winning K Zone at the College World Series. K Zone identifies the speed and location of a pitch in replays as well as tracks the path of the ball from the pitcher’s hand through the strike zone and numerically sequences pitches thrown. ESPN worked with Sportvision to develop the technology that is also seen on the network’s Major League Baseball telecasts.
Telecasts will also utilize the X Mo replay system that films more frames per second of action than previous slow- motion capabilities. The technology eliminates motion blur and provides the viewer with clearer images, such as ball rotation, seams on the ball, a slide at the plate and more.
SportsCenter at the College World Series
SportsCenter segments will originate from TD Ameritrade Park from June 18-20 and include analysts Hershiser, Peterson and Garciaparra on set.
“Omaha to the Bigs”
New “Omaha to Bigs” vignettes will showcase ESPN Major League Baseball analyst and former professional manager Terry Francona, who won two World Series with the Boston Red Sox, and former ESPN college baseball analyst and current Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura.
Digital and Social Media
In addition to traditional coverage, ESPN.com and other digital platforms will provide unique, original content of the NCAA Baseball Championship. For the fourth consecutive year, ESPN will use social networking sites Facebook (ESPNOmaha) and Twitter (@ESPN_Omaha) to provide fans with updates and behind-the-scenes insight into the tournament.
Sports Science
Telecasts will include several Sports Science segments, including host John Brenkus providing a look at how TD Ameritrade Park has a lower rate of home runs and runs scored compared to Rosenblatt Stadium, which hosted the College World Series from 1950-2010.
Music from Jason Aldean
For the second consecutive year, every telecast will incorporate songs from country artist Jason Aldeanin musical highlight packages that will demonstrate the passion, essence and atmosphere of the College World Series. The video montage will include Aldean concert footage and game and scenic highlights.
