2/20 – NHL on NBC to Six-Year High in Overnight Ratings

The first half of Sunday’s ‘Hockey Day in America’ doubleheader on NBC produced the highest non-Winter Classic overnight in six years for NBC. Regional NHL action featuring Sharks/Red Wings earned a 1.4 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, up 17% from last year’s regional coverage (NYR/PHI*: 1.2). According to Puck the Media, the 1.4 overnight is the second-highest for a regular season NHL telecast on NBC (excluding the Winter Classic) since the network began televising games in the 2005-06 season. The only telecast to earn a higher overnight was the inaugural edition of the NHL on NBC in January 2006 (1.5). The numbers are even more impressive when one considers that the telecast aired opposite Sunday’s Mavericks/Knicks game on ABC, which earned a 4.8 overnight. The second half of Sunday’s doubleheader did not fare as well. The Bruins/Wild regular season game drew a 1.0 overnight, down 17% from last year (PIT/CHI: 1.2), reported by Sports Media Watch.
