1/16 – Broncos/Patriots Ratings Are Strong, But Not a Record

The Broncos/Patriots AFC Divisional Round game earned a 20.6 overnight rating on CBS Saturday night, up 14% from the comparable game last year (GB/ATL: 18.1, FOX), and up 10% from the comparable game in 2010 (BAL/IND: 18.7). Though up from last year’s primetime games, Broncos/Patriots was actually down 1% compared to last year’s Saturday game on CBS (BAL/PIT: 20.9), which aired at 4:30 PM ET. In addition, the game did not even earn the top audience of the day, trailing Saints/49ers on FOX. CBS noted that the game earned the highest overnight for a primetime Divisional Round game in eleven years. However, there is only one primetime Divisional Round window each season, and that window has only existed for eleven years (the first Saturday night game aired in the 2001-02 season). That said, the game did earn the third-highest overnight for a Saturday Divisional Round game dating back to the 1998-99 season, behind Ravens/Steelers last year and Saints/49ers earlier in the day. In the days leading up to Saturday’s game, there had been talk that the ratings could be the highest ever for a Divisional Round game. However, the 20.6 overnight rating is tied for 24th among the 54 Divisional Round games dating back to the 1998-99 season. Notably, Saturday’s game was down 21% from last week’s Steelers/Broncos Wild Card game (25.9). Keep in mind that game aired in the 4:30 PM Sunday window, which is typically the strongest NFL telecast window, according to Sports Media Watch.
