Viewership dropped by more than a quarter for Mexico’s opening match in the Copa America soccer tournament. Monday’s Mexico/Chile Copa America match earned 4.032 million viewers on Univision, down 26% from Mexico’s first Copa America match in 2007 (MEX/BRA: 5.471M). Though down from 2007, Monday’s match still helped Univision win the night in total viewers and adults 18-49 in top ten markets Los Angeles (#2), Chicago (#3) Dallas (#5), Houston (#10). Mexico has been a major draw for Univision in recent years. The team’s Gold Cup matches against Honduras (7.115M) and the United States (7.981M) rank among the four most-viewed sporting events ever on the network, while their World Cup match against Argentina last year ranks first all-time (9.405M), according to SMW.
