Almost eight million viewers tuned into Univision’s coverage of the 2011 Gold Cup final between Mexico and the United States. Saturday’s Mexico/United States match drew 7.981 million viewers on Univision Saturday night, up a whopping 48% from the network’s coverage of the 2009 Gold Cup final, which featured the same two teams (MEX/USA: 5.384M). The match ranks as the third-most viewed sporting event ever on Univision, behind only last year’s Spain/Netherlands World Cup Final (8.821M) and last year’s Argentina/Mexico World Cup Round of 16 match (9.405M). In addition, the match stands as the network’s single-most viewed primetime sporting event. Of note, the Univision broadcast drew 4.719 million viewers in the key adults 18-49 demographic, actually topping Game 7 of the Bruins/Canucks Stanley Cup Final on NBC (4.436M). The NHL telecast did earn more viewers overall (8.540M), according to SMW.
