5/2 – PGA Unveils Strokes Gained-Putting

Traditionally, the most meaningful putting statistic in a pro golf tournament has always been “putts per round,” that is, the number of putts a player took that day on the course. The PGA Tour always reprinted the statistic, and Johnny Miller and Nick Faldo frequently mentioned it during NBC and CBS golf telecasts. It was supposedly the best way to determine how well (or how badly) a player was using the flat stick. But now the PGA Tour believes they’ve found a better metric, something they are calling “strokes gained-putting,” which measures a player’s putting performance in relation to other players in a given tournament. The Tour, which announced the new stat today, believes it is more meaningful than “putts-per-round,” according to Forbes.
