Australian television and online broadcasters will pay a record 1.25 billion Australian dollars (US$1.36 billion) over five years for the rights to air Australian Football League games, raising the stakes among the nation’s most popular team sports to attract higher fees for exclusive screening deals. Pay TV broadcaster Foxtel and Seven Group Holdings Ltd. will share the largest rights to show the sport, the league announced Thursday. Foxtel, jointly owned by Telstra Corp. Ltd., News Corp.’s Australian unit and Consolidated Media Holdings Ltd. will show all games for the first time. Foxtel gained the largest share of screening rights, broadcasting all games between 2012-2016. The size of the deal is a success for the sport—also known as Aussie Rules—with the fees being reinjected back into the game, including player wages across its 17 teams and more funding for grass-roots development., according to WSJ.com
