The final round coverage of the PGA Championship earned the lowest numbers since 2008, when the event plunged to record lows opposite the Olympic Games. CBS drew a 4.1 final rating and 6.107 million viewers for final round coverage of the PGA Championship on August 14, down 5% in ratings and 6% in viewership from last year (4.3, 6.511M), and down 38% and 39%, respectively, from 2009 (6.6, 10.079M). This marks the lowest rated, least-viewed final round of the PGA Championship since 2008, when coverage drew a 2.8 rating and 4.020 million viewers opposite the Olympics. Notably, this year’s final round drew a lower rating and fewer viewers than third round coverage two years ago. Of the last 30 editions of the PGA Championship (dating back to 1982), Sunday’s final round ranks as the fifth-lowest rated — ahead of only 1992 (4.0), 1996 (3.7), 1986 (3.5) and 2008 (2.8). Third round action on August 14 earned a 2.3 and 3.338 million viewers, down 18% in ratings and viewership from last year (2.3, 4.085M), and down 46% in both measures compared to 2009 (4.3, 6.193M). The 2.3 rating is the second-lowest for third round coverage of the PGA Championship since at least ’82, ahead of only rained-out coverage in 2008 (0.9). Overall, ratings and viewership declined for third and final round coverage of all four golf majors this year — with the lone exception of the final round of the British Open on ESPN, which was up 10% in ratings and 9% in viewership compared to 2010, according to SMW.
