NBC is set to finally officially announce a new name for Versus, according to a report by USA Today. According to USA Today, NBC Sports Group will announce on Monday that Versus will be renamed NBC Sports Network effective January 2. The announcement comes just months after Comcast acquired a majority stake in NBC Universal, making NBC and Versus corporate siblings. The name change was months in the making. Former NBC Sports Group chairman Dick Ebersol said in April that a new name for Versus was “no more than 90 days away,” and that it would include a “strong utilization of the word NBC in the title” (nhl.com, 4/19). NBC Sports Network is the third name for the channel once known as the Outdoor Life Network. OLN was renamed Versus in 2006, just one year into a television deal with the indoor National Hockey League, according to SMW.
