This morning’s historic Australian Open men’s championship – Roger Federer’s 20th Major title – has been added to the ESPNEWS schedule tonight at 8 p.m. ET. The four-hour telecast will include the entire match. Federer, the No. 2 seed, defeated No. 6 Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in Melbourne and seen live on ESPN (and on ESPN2 at 10 a.m.). ESPNEWS is also available via the ESPN app.
The match was called by Chris Fowler in the court-level bunker of Rod Laver Arena with the Brothers McEnroe – John and Patrick. Brad Gilbert reported from courtside. The telecast will include a post-match interview on the ESPN set with Federer by host Chris McKendry and analysts Gilbert and Jason Goodall.
Federer, 36, extended his record for Major championships among men with the win; Rafael Nadal is next with 16. The win comes nearly 15 years after the first Major crown for the Swiss, Wimbledon in 2003. He is now tied for the most Australian Open titles, 6, with Novak Djokovic and Australian legend Roy Emerson.
ESPN aired more than 100 live hours of the Australian Open on its networks, with first-ball-to-last-ball coverage. Every match of the tournament was available live and on demand on the ESPN app.
