Alabama/LSU Football Gets a 5.3 Overnight

The SEC on CBS took the top two spots on the season’s biggest college football weekend.

The Alabama/LSU college football game drew a 5.3 overnight rating on CBS Saturday night, down 23% from the same match-up last year (6.9), but still the season’s highest overnight on CBS. The previous high was a 5.1 for Florida/Alabama in September. Overall, the 5.3 is the second-highest of the season on any network, trailing only Notre Dame/Florida State on ABC (8.5).

The double-digit decline was in large part due to stronger competition. ABC’s concurrent Ohio State/Michigan State game drew a 4.2 overnight, more than double last year’s competing telecast (Notre Dame/Pittsburgh). While Alabama/LSU still won the ratings battle comfortably, the game no doubt cut into its audience.

Earlier in the day, Texas A&M/Auburn drew a 4.5 overnight — up 45% from Mississippi State/Texas A&M last year (3.1), but down 32% from Texas A&M/Alabama in 2012 (6.6). Head-to-head, the Aggies’ upset win topped Notre Dame/Arizona State on ABC by 20% (3.5).

Overall, the SEC on CBS produced the two highest college football overnights of the weekend — the seventh time in nine weeks that it has topped the charts, reports Sports Media Watch.
