4/22 – George Mason Hoops Has Successor in Mind

Jim Larranaga, the charismatic coach who took George Mason to the Final Four in 2006, was hired Friday as University of Miami basketball coach, replacing Frank Haith. The question is who is the next Mason coach? Although the search begins immediately for Mason, the leading candidate appears to be Mike Lonergan, who currently coaches at Vermont, according to sources near the team. Lonergan is a DC area native, former head coach at Catholic University, and former University of Maryland assistant coach under Gary Williams.  He knows the area, the recruiting path, and he would be making a move up as head coach in the recently-successful Colonial conference. The move could happen as early as next week.
